World Champion Tuition

High acclaim for Andrew's driving ability!
Andrew received an unexpected and very welcome boost in his bid to become one of Britain's top rally drivers earlier this year. (2004)

Motorsports NOW! Magazine, the Motor Sport Association UK's publication, invited Andrew to a full driver assessment with 2003 Group N World Rally Champion, Britain's Martin Rowe. The assessment was to be carried out in a full spec. Group A Subaru Impreza rally car, with well over 300bhp and 4 wheel drive, and the results to be published in the magazine.

22 Motorsport, the team that took Andrew to second in the National Rally Championship in 2001, kindly provided the car, which would prove a challenge to our driver in itself. All Andrew's experience had been in front wheel drive rally cars, usually offering half the power of the Subaru. An added twist was the fact that the test car was left hand drive, (as most World Championship cars are), something which has caused problems for far more experienced drivers than Coley. Needless to say the pressure was on, and with any mistake to be covered by a national magazine, doubly so.

Fog and rain greeted the team and Andrew at the test venue in Oxfordshire, visibility was 50 feet and the already slippery gravel even more treacherous. As the car was being prepped for the first run the fog lifted, but with a low ambient temperature the road would would remain wet and greasy. Following a demonstration run from the World Champion, who of course made it look like a walk in the park, Andrew took the wheel for the first time.

Over the five runs Andrew had in the ex works USA Impreza, every detail was covered and improved upon, from line and gear selection through to commitment and smoothness. Each run was an improvement on the previous one, culminating in a perfect final run which both Andrew and Martin had obviously enjoyed. Despite the step up to vastly different and faster machinery, Andrew proved his talent behind the wheel, and turned in a mightily impressive performance.

World Champion Rowe commented: "Andrew did a great job today. He was in the deep end and didn't want to mess up. The stage conditions were very difficult but he coped well, he showed he could get to grips with the car in a very short space of time. The last run went really well, everything we discussed clicked into place. I feel he has achieved a great deal during today."

Our driver Andrew was of course equally pleased, and remarked with his usual enthusiasm: "Fantastic day, awesome car. I'm stoked with the way I drove today and very pleased that 22 and Martin are happy with my performance too. Massive thanks to them and Motorsports Now! for the opportunity to drive such a great car!"

Here at APCsport we are obviously very pleased that our driver has the backing of a World Champion; if you want to be involved with our future champion please see our Sponsorship and Marketing page. The article was released in the Summer 2004 edition of Motorsports NOW! magazine; it was the 'leading' article in the issue, with 5 pages of copy and the front cover.
